Pumwani Majengo is a community with a rich historical and Cultural background. The first inhabitants of Majengo Pumwani division were builders of east African railways who put up some building while in Nairobi city and remained there.
It was during colonial days that Majengo grew to become quite popular to freedom fighters who could not settle in areas reserved for the settlers.
Majengo, which was first known as Sofia Town, become an entertainment spot for the many British Soldiers and their courier corps who frequented the village to watch cultural performances by most women groups.
Slums Information Development and Resource Centres (SIDAREC) is a youth/Children development project operating in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. The organization was established in Majengo Pumwani division in 1996 as a community based youth group with an aim of tapping and consolidating skills and talents existing among the youth/children in the community for the common benefit of the slum dwellers.
This was in line with acceptable knowledge, that despite all the problems affecting slum dwellers from a different perspective, a lot of untapped resource exists in the communities; resources that if acknowledged, harnessed and utilized would be useful in bringing the much needed positive development change under the concept that’ community problems need community solutions.
SIDAREC developed and changed status to a nongovernmental organization in the year 1997. This culminated into the building of a community resource centre in Majengo Pumwani division. The organization has so far established three resource centres in three major slums in Nairobi namely Pumwani, Mukuru and Kibra serving a combined population of over 1.5million people.
SIDAREC has won several awards in its various activities involving slum community service.
