    SIDAREC social enterprise fund was established to offer financial support in form of loans to self-help groups and individuals that are starting, developing or growing a social enterprise business in the communities that we operate. These are social entrepreneursin the community who are within groups, united in their passion for change, and using the business to power that change and to be more self-reliant in creating the change they seek in the community.

SIDAREC Background information

Slums Information Development and Resource Centers (SIDAREC) is a youth/children development project operating in the slums of Nairobi. The organization was established in 1996 as a community based youth group with an aim of tapping and consolidating skills and talents existing among the youth/children in the community for the common benefit of the slum dwellers.

SIDAREC values networking and see it as an important means to share knowledge and resources and to build better programs. The organization has been promoting networking, linkages and collaboration among civil society organizations and other stakeholders including the government and private sector involved in development work that build on her vision and mission. This has led to the establishment and development in international, national, regional and community thematic networks at various levels. These networks act as platforms to enhance sharing of ideas, building staff capacity, developing newlearning’s, pooling resources together and accessing donor funding.

Currently SIDAREC is part on a consortium of development Organizations working in urban slums with a network code Kibera Intervention Group (KIG) which is a five year synergetic collaboration of five experienced organizations that have been working towards alleviating poverty in slums, each with complimentary expertise from their individual work thus building synergy to a achieve a comprehensive impact to their beneficiaries. The five years project whose term ends June 2014 was funded by America Gives Back (AGB) and Comic Relief.

These organizations are:         

  • Slums Information Development & Resource Centres(SIDAREC),
  • UZIMA Foundation Africa (UZIMA),
  • Kenya Girl Guides Association (KGGA),
  • Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW) and
  • Kibera Women Network (KWN).
